1. Claims

The manufacturer of Oxycodone downplayed the risks and overstated the benefits of the drugs. State Attorneys General decided to protect their people by pursuing legal action, including Delaware, New York, Ohio, West Virginia, and even Alaska.

2. Oxycodone Verdicts

One of the first settlements came after a verdict in a state trial:

The maker of OxyContin and the company’s controlling family agreed to pay $270 million in a deal announced Tuesday with the state of Oklahoma to settle allegations they helped set off the nation’s deadly opioid crisis with their aggressive marketing of the powerful painkiller.  It is the first settlement to come out of the recent coast-to-coast wave of lawsuits against Stamford, Connecticut-based Purdue Pharma that threaten to push the company into bankruptcy and have stained the name of the Sackler family… That’s when a state judge in Oklahoma socked it with a $572-million judgment for its role in creating the state’s opioid crisis, which is one of the worst in the nation. Stocks in other opioid companies also have risen.

Now, an overall settlement has been proposed.

Purdue Pharma and its owners, members of the Sackler family, have tentatively reached the first comprehensive settlement with lawyers representing thousands of municipal governments, tribes and states nationwide that are suing the pharmaceutical industry for the devastation resulting from the opioid epidemic.
